Thumbs up for electronic certificates

In the region of 40 million* Certificates of Motor Insurance were printed, posted and delivered to customers last year by the General Insurance industry. According to Carbon Smart* this equates to 9,750 trees and 2,280 tonnes of Co2.

After five years of discussions between the British Insurance Brokers Association and numerous ministers within Government we are delighted to see these changes in legislation. There are real benefits to everyone here, a positive environmental impact combined with a swift efficient service to consumers that is not subject to postal delays or strikes for those that wish their documents to be sent electronically.

The legislation that has been passed this year amends the Road Traffic Act 1988 and Motor Vehicle (Third Party Risks) regulations 197 to reflect that where a customer agrees to electronic delivery with their insurance provider, a Certificate of Motor Insurance can now be legally issued as an email attachment or accessed via the website of their Insurance provider.

Greenlight are pleased to be able to offer our customers the opportunity to both receive their documentation in a slick efficient manner and reduce the impact upon the environment.

We have given consideration to some of the questions that our customers may have and listed these in Q&A format below:

Q. Can Greenlight still send me a paper certificate?
A. Yes, we can still send traditional paper certificates to customers that are unable to receive them online.

Q. Can I print the Motor Insurance Certificate off at home and use it in a Post Office to tax my car?
A. Yes, providing the printed version is legible.

Q. If I change my car or cancel my policy I would always send my Certificate back - how do I do that now?
A. This will depend upon the individual processing requirements of each Insurer, but our staff will be able to confirm what additional action is required at the time. It’s likely to either require a recording of your verbal confirmation of the amendment, a letter, fax or email from your nominated address.

Q. Can I make changes to the electronic certificate myself?
A. No, it is an offence to make changes to it.

Q. How will I receive it?
A. Greenlight will send your Certificate in secured PDF format to your nominated email address.
